The first of its kind initiative was launched on Monday.
This bus departs Kasargod at 8 am and reaches Mangalore at 9.30am. On its return journey, it leaves Mangalore at 6.05pm and reaches Kasargod at 7.30pm.
KSRTC, Mangalore division, which has 500 buses runs 37 buses on Mangalore-Kasargod route. Daily a total of 264 trips are done on this route and it has direct competition with private buses.
Women travelling in buses often face several awkward situation, about which they do not opt to speak. Hence during the review of Mangalore division's performance, this decision of having separate bus for women was conceptualised. Apart from giving a sense of security to women, the initiative also aims to keep KSRTC in fray against the private players in the field.
These buses are targeting at commuters from across the border in Kasargod who have to reach their college and work place in Mangalore.
The division also planned to extend the service after reviewing the response in coming days.
Divisional traffic officer, N G Sreenivas, told costaldigest.com that many women have the need of women's service buses between Kasargod-Mangalore. New service is started after the survey, the report of which was positive. "If this service becomes a hit then the service will be extended to other parts of the DK district," he said adding that there are several lady conductors who work in buses, but find it difficult to deliver their duty. Hence this special bus will have lady conductor.
Sreenivas said barring BMTC, the Mangalore division of KSRTC could be the first division to start an exclusive bus service on a selected route for women. Good response on this route may help us to extend service in other highway route too. Based on demand city will also have improved bus service, he said.
