Mangalore, Aug 14: The problem of maintenance and repair of check-dams in Dakshina Kannada district was discussed during the tri-monthly KDP meeting held at Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat here on Wednesday, which was chaired by ZP President Koragappa Naik.
According to the ZP Chief Planning Officer, there were a total of 813 check dams in the district, out of which 230 were in need of repairs. Out of them, there were few dams that were not being used, and few others whose payment was pending, he said.
He informed the ZP president that since no contractors came forward when tenders were called for improvement of vented dams at Valambra and Mundaje villages in Belthangady taluk, the funds had lapsed leading to the closure of the projects.
In response, Koragappa Naik directed the official to submit a detailed report on the total number of vented and check dams, those which required maintenance and those which were not being used.
Electrification of Anganwadi centres
On the issue of electrification of Anganwadi centres, officials from Women and Child Welfare Department said that electricity was yet to be provided to 19 Anganwadis in the district.
They said that wiring had been completed in few Anganwadi centres but electricity was yet to be provided, for which the ZP CEO Tulsi Maddideni replied that merely completion of wiring did not ensure electricity. She instructed the officials to provide the exact details of status of the project.
Housing sites for the poor
Providing the details of housing sites provided to poor families including SC/STs, minorities and physically handicapped under various housing schemes, the executive officers of each taluk presented the number of sites that had been handed over to the reserved categories.
A total of 56 sites in three gram panchayats had been approved by the District Commissioner in Sullia taluk, while sites had been distributed in four gram panchayats in Belthangady taluk. In the Mangalore City Corporation limits, about 800 applications had been selected for sites, the target being 1800. However, title deeds to only 85 sites had been handed over to beneficiaries, due to lack of available housing sites, said an official.
