Mangalore, Aug 24: A lot of times in life, the thing that matters is motivation. It really makes all the difference, said bestselling-writer and youth icon Chetan Bhagat, during his first visit to Mangalore on Saturday.
The writer displayed his oratory skills and presented a talk on leadership and goal setting and also interacted with the audience at a programme organised at T M A Pai Convention Centre in the city.
Striking a chord with Mangaloreans, he began by stating that his was an accidental foray into public talks. Talking on the concept of success and motivation required to achieve it, Mr Bhagat said that success was also a great motivator, but the difficulty lay in getting that bit of success to develop motivation for bigger goals.
“Success is a sense of accomplishment, and everyone has a different definition of success. The initial few years of your life are so critical, when your motivation, abilities and hard work has a lot to do with your success. However, most people and students quit if they are not motivated,” he said, explaining that this response was similar to the 'fight or flight' mechanism that animals were designed with.
“Most humans have more ability than they think they have. Tell yourself to fight these responses. Decide that you will not quit,” he said.
“Ask yourself – 'Jitna aapki aukaat hai, use zyaada haasil kiya ya nahi' to ascertain your level of success in life. Although you cannot change your circumstances, what you change is your response to them,” he told the audience.
'Want to bring a change'
“Success is achieving what you truly want. I'd never imagined in my dreams that I'd become a full-time fiction writer,” adding that he also wanted to reach out to the maximum number of people in India through his activities.
“I want to bring a change in the way people think and the policies they follow. The secret of happiness is to keep giving yourself new goals to reach. Indian has been good to me and I want to give something back to people in return,” he shared with the audience.
He went on to speak about defining long-time goals for oneself and how to stick to the plan of action. “Always keep goals in your life, and make sure you constantly check your motivation levels in order to reach them,” he advised.
