Puttur, Aug 25: A local court on Saturday sentenced a 45-year-old NRI man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his wife.
According to prosecution, the accused NRI Sulaiman killed his wife Ayisha (30) pushing her in a rivulet in Pulittadi in Uppinangady two years ago.
5th Additional District Sessions Magistrate T J Shivashankare Gowda pronounced the quantum of punishment on Saturday.
Son of the couple four-year-old Aman, then two-year-old, was only the eye-witness examined by the prosecution. Relying on circumstantial evidence, the Magistrate held the accused guilty of charges under section 302 (murder) of IPC and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
In addition, Rs 5,000 are to be paid to the state. He will also concurrently undergo a rigorous punishment of three years for destroying evidence. If he failed to pay the fine, he shall undergo an additional term of three years in jail.
Sulaiman, who was working in Taif in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had returned nearly two months ago. Soon after the death, Sulaiman attempted suicide citing 'unable to bear the loss of his wife'. Later he escaped from the scene.
However, locals who gathered near the rivulet noticed severe injury marks on forehead, cheek and head of the dead body. The injuries were indicating that somebody might have dumped the body into rivulet after beating her to death.
Dowry harassment
Ayisha's father had lodged a complaint with Uppinangady police station, accusing that the family members of Sulaiman including his mother and sisters used to torture Ayisha demanding to bring more dowry.
The complainant had mentioned that they had given 35 pawan gold and a cash amount of Rs 1 lakh as dowry to Sulaiman during the marriage in October 2007.
