Mangalore, Aug 27: Release of official scientific journal of Yenepoya University “Archives of Medicine and Health Sciences", followed by Y M K Memorial Oration, was held at the Indoor Auditorium-Yenepoya University Campus on Monday, 26 August.
Dr MS Valiyathan, National Research Professor of Manipal University after releasing the journal said, “scientific journal is the integrated part of science and Indians' contribution in publishing it is very low. Publishing print journal and its reach is a major task. Indians are interested in publishing scientific journals in western countries but not in India. Every department should start publishing journals and reaching to maximum people.”
Y M K Memorial Oration was delivered by Pro-Chancellor of Nitte University Dr M Shantharam Shetty and he spoke on the topic “leadership in medicine”. Speaking about physicians' practices he said, "doctors are becoming unethical and are getting attracted towards money. At the same time pharmaceutical companies are leading them towards corruption."
He said that by end of 2015, the country will need additional 6 lakh doctors. Talking about the present curriculum, he opined that it has to be changed laying more emphasis on practicals.
Adding to the topic leadership in global medicine he said, “origin of medicine was in India but it was destroyed and now western countries have patents it. We still produce half-baked doctors in India and they cannot be the leaders in world market.”
Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, Vice Chancellor, Yenepoya University presided over the formal function and Dr Akhter Hussain, Dr Janardhana Konaje and Dr BP Shelly were present during the occasion.
