Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation K. C. Venugopal informed the Lok Sabha on August 29 that the Court of Inquiry appointed by the Government to look into the tragedy had submitted its report and the same had been accepted by the competent authority, according to a press release by the Press Information Bureau.
All the 160 cases (i.e. 152 deceased and 08 injury cases) have been settled for an overall amount of Rs. 115.74 crores. Out of 160 cases, 130 cases have been settled on full and final basis and 30 cases have been settled on Receipt Basis i.e., without signing full Release and Discharge document as per the judgement of Division Bench of Kerala High Court, the release said.
As many as 158 people were killed when the Air India Express Boeing 737 overshot the runway and crashed into a ravine on the periphery of the airport.
The Court of Inquiry (CoI) by the government in its report has said that the crash was caused by the failure of the pilot, Captain Zlatko Glusica, — a British national of Serbian origin — to discontinue an “un-stabilised approach” and persisting with the landing.
The CoI found that the direct cause of the accident was Capt. Glusica's “failure to discontinue the un-stabilised approach and his persistence in continuing with the landing, despite three calls from the First Officer (H.S. Ahluwalia) to go around and a number of warnings from EGPWS (enhanced ground proximity warning systems)”.
