Mangalore, Sep 4: There was scuffle between the jailor and an under-trial when the former stopped the latter from speaking to another under-trial Pradeep Mendon in the prison on Tuesday.
Pradeep Mendon, an accused in 14 criminal cases including underworld operative Bejai Raja's murder, had been served with detention order on Tuesday under the provisions of Goonda (The Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum Grabbers) Act 1985. This requires prison personnel to keep Mendon in a separate enclosure.
The Prison authorities received the detention order issued by Police Commissioner Manish Kharbikar on Tuesday. Jailor V Chavan entered the prison with the order around noon when under-trials were having lunch. When Mr. Chavan saw under-trial Surya speaking with Mendon, he told Surya to go away as Mendon had to be isolated. This angered Surya and he reportedly tried to assault Mr. Chavan. Mr. Chavan filed a complaint with the Barke police.
Mr. Kharbikar said this was the first time the Mangalore Police Commissionerate had invoked provisions of the Goonda Act in order to preserve public peace and order.
