Speaking after inaugurating the three-day festival, she said that song, music and dance bring cheerfulness and gaiety to mind. Theatre also helps people to understand belongingness and the society. It is necessary to create a liking towards art and culture among young minds, she said, adding that such cultural programmes help in this regard.
“The Padmashree award does not belong to me, rather it should go to all those who encouraged art,” she said.
As many as 65 colleges will be participating in this cultural extravaganza. Students competed in various events such as classical vocal and instrumental, light vocal, western vocal, group song and folk orchestra among music, folk and classical dance, quiz, elocution and debate in literary events and other competitions such as theatre, painting, collage, clay modelling, cartooning and photography.
In his presidential address, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy said that acclaimed personalities in the field of art such as Jayashree served as encouragement to budding artists and art-lovers. Along with academic pursuit, cultural activities also supplement studies, he said.
University registrar Prof P S Yadapadithaya and Student Welfare Officer P L Dharma were present during the inaugural programme.
