Mangalore, Sep 7: Chaos prevailed on Friday evening when a group of students led by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad gheraoed Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo's residence demanding better facilities and higher budgetary allocation for students in Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Other Backward Classes government hostels.
As many as 150 students along with ABVP activists arrived at the MLA's house at 7.30 p.m. and gheraoed demanding a monthly allocation of Rs. 1,500 per student for food from the current Rs. 850, as well as maintain hygiene in the kitchens and godowns of the hostels.
Later they were taken into custody by Kadri police. As soon as they reached the police station, the Congress workers assembled and demanded to register FIR against the ABVP activists. “If the students truly concerned about the condition of the hostels, they should have met and discussed the issue personally with MLA instead of laying siege at his residence,” the congress workers argued.
They also said that the same outfit never demonstrated in front of BJP MLAs for the same cause when they were in the power. MLA Lobo assured that he would convene a meeting on Saturday to solve the problem.
Later, students among the protestors were let off.
A case has been registered in Kadri police station.
