Although permanent sources of water sources are available for drinking water in towns and cities, they have not been utilised properly. The department is making efforts to effectively utilise all water sources and make a sustainable plan for drinking water till 2040, he said.
Speaking about upcoming projects in Dakshina Kannada district, he said that all towns in the state would be brought under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) which would manage the water supply system, urban transport, infrastructure and drainage system in those towns.
Land Bank
Lamenting that several developmental programmes had stalled due to scarcity of land, he said that a'land bank' would be set up, under which land would be fixed in each gram panchayat which would be utilised for developmental programmes undertaken by the ministry.
Those gram panchayats with population of over 10,000 and over 50 percent of land used for non-agricultural activities will be converted into town panchayats. Currently, there is a plan for Bijapur, Tumkur and Shimoga to be converted into corporations, he said, adding that capacity-building programmes would be undertaken by the department in the future.
