Bangalore, Sep 19: Six-year-old Anusha died an untimely death, in an unlikely way. On Wednesday, she succumbed to burns sustained after falling into a vessel of hot “sambar” at her school in Gauribidnur taluk a day before.

The class I student of Darinayakanapalya Government Primary School barely knew that an attempt to overcome hunger could turn fatal.

A group of around 20 children had come running out of their class at 1 pm on Tuesday. Hungry, all they wanted was to grab a plate-full of midday meal. Teachers were busy in the staff room while cooks were in the kitchen. Unfortunately, the vessel of “sambar” did not have a lid on it.

“We heard some noise and found that Anusha had slipped into the container. She was crying for help. A few of us tried to pull her out. Teachers rushed out after hearing a commotion,” a student said.

Anusha was the youngest daughter of Ashwathappa and Venkatalakshmi, both labourers. She was admitted to Victoria Hospital with more than 80 per cent burns. Doctors had said they would comment on her condition only after 48 hours. However, efforts to revive her failed.

Her parents and elder brother Anand were inconsolable. Villagers even staged a protest and held up cremation until the local MLA and the primary and secondary education minister arrived. Gauribidnur MLA N?H Shivashankar promised a compensation of Rs 50,000 to Anusha's parents.

“I will make efforts to get the compensation from the taluk and zilla panchayats and employment for her parents, besides housing facility. I will ensure stern action against errant teachers,” he said.

The school of over 120 students has 11 teachers. Deputy Director of Public Instructions (DDPI) Ajit Prasad said: “Headmaster Krishnappa has been suspended and all cooks sacked. Certain instructions were issued to all schools serving midday meal, but most schools flout norms.”

This is the second such incident in the State in 10 days. Santosh Parappa Hanumannavar also died after falling into a vessel of hot “sambar” in Jaganur Government Primary School in Chikkodi taluk. He died at a government hospital in Belgaum. Midday meal joint director Jayakumar said: “It is an unfortunate incident and the schools should adopt strict rules while serving meals.”

He said when food is being served, teachers should ensure that the children stand in a queue. “Here the children were let free. This led to the accident,” he said.

Jayakumar said the schools should not leave big vessels of sambar and rice outside the kitchen. Instead, they should use small buckets. Besides, the children should not be allowed near the kitchen.

A government school teacher from Chintamani said: “The teachers leave the students alone and have their lunch, there are only two to three midday meal staff. It becomes difficult for them to handle the students. The education department should make it a rule that the teachers should be with the children while they are having lunch.”

Karwar, May 5: What commenced as a mere exchange of words between spouses swiftly transmuted into a calamitous ordeal, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of their innocent offspring. The heart-wrenching incident unfolded in the serene confines of Halamaddy village in the picturesque expanse of Dandeli, nestled within the idyllic expanse of Uttara Kannada district.

In the throes of a fervent dispute with her spouse, the aggrieved wife, succumbing to an overwhelming surge of emotions, callously propelled their tender six-year-old progeny into the somber depths of a nearby canal, thereafter alerting the local populace to her grievous act.

Promptly apprised of the distressing occurrence by concerned bystanders, the authorities were swiftly summoned to the scene to confront the harrowing aftermath.

Responding to the distress call, the diligent officers of Dandeli rural police swiftly converged upon the site where the innocent child had been cast into the unforgiving waters of the canal, subsequently effecting the retrieval of the child's lifeless form.

Regrettably, it was discerned that a portion of the child's remains had been tragically claimed by the lurking jaws of a predatory crocodile.

devaraje gowda.jpg

In a fresh claim, arrested BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda has alleged that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and four other ministers were behind exposing Prajwal Revanna’s sex scam that has brought disgrace to Janata Dal (Secular) H D Deve Gowda family.

Devaraje Gowda has been arrested in a sexual abuse case.

Speaking to reporters while being taken to the district prisons, in Hassan on Friday, Gowda alleged that he was offered Rs 100 crore to drag the name of H D Kumaraswamy in the Prajwal’s case.

“D K Shivakumar had offered me Rs 100 crore to project that H D Kumaraswamy was behind the case. The offer was made through ministers N Chaluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge and another minister. They had even sent Rs 5 crore as advance to Bowring Club. But I did not agree. Hence, they hatched a plot to trap me,” Gowda alleged.

“It is D K Shivakumar, who collected all information from Prajwal Revanna’s former car driver Karthik and readied the pen drive. A team of four ministers were formed to handle the issue. As I did not agree to the plan. They planned to bring disrepute to the BJP, Narendra Modi and H D Kumaraswamy,” he said.

Gowda further alleged that former MLC M A Gopalaswamy of Channarayapatna was sent to him for negotiation.

“The main intention of D K Shivakumar is to bring disrepute to Modi and BJP in the case. Besides, he wanted to defame H D Kumaraswamy’s leadership in the state” he claimed. “They filed a sexual harassment and rape case against me, but found no evidence. Now, they are trying to fix me in the pen drive case” he alleged.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Sunday said that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing into sexual abuse charges against Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, will not be going abroad to bring him back, and the Interpol will share information about him.

He also cautioned political leaders about making public statements or sharing information in connection with the case, which is sensitive.

The 33-year-old Prajwal Revanna, who is grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, is facing charges of sexually abusing several women.

The scandal has raised a political storm with the ruling Congress and BJP-JD(S) engaged in a slugfest.

Prajwal Revanna is said to have flown abroad on April 27, a day after the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka was held.

He was BJP-JD(S) alliance's joint candidate from Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to polls in the first phase.

"No, there is no such option. Blue Corner Notice has been issued and the Interpol will share the information. The respective country in which he is found or identified - they will inform them (Interpol) and then our agencies, the CBI will get to know, and through them we will get to know."

"So far there is no information," Parameshwara said.

He was responding to a question on reports about the SIT team travelling abroad in connection with the case.

Speaking to reporters, he said, "Investigation is going on, not to affect the investigation we don't want to share any information."

Responding to a question on Union Minister Pralhad Joshi's statement alleging conspiracy behind the arrest of BJP leader Devaraje Gowda, for making allegations against Congress leaders in connection with the case, Parameshwara said, "If anyone says anything I cannot react to it. We cannot respond to every public statement. As this is a serious case, we cannot share information until the investigation is completed."

"My request to the public and to our leaders is to be cautious while making statements. If not, based on the statements given by them, we may have to call them for investigation and record their statement under 41 A of CrPC," he added.

Asked whether JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy will also be served notice, the Minister said he is a former CM and that he believes that the former has taken this case seriously.

"Before giving any statements on this case or before sharing any information in the public domain, one has to be cautious, and this applies to all," he added.
