Mangalore, Sep 19: “English literature in India originates from British colonial time and India and Africa are the first countries in institutionalising it in world”, said Global Distinguished Professor of English, New York University Dr Rajeshwari Sunder Rajan, after inaugurating “All Write” UGC sponsored national-level workshop on “English for Specific Purposes” organised by English department of St Agnes College and Association of English Teachers of Mangalore University at PG Auditorium, St Agnes College on Thursday.
“English literature is a British colonial product with colonial heritage and used as global communication tool. In India during 19th century women started using English in their literary works and criticism. Even construction of fancy and cosy literary works took place”, she said adding that'English has become interdisciplinary language', mainly because of its usage and communication between departments.
Prof Charles Furtado, Dr Geralyn Pinto, HOD, English Department, St Agnes PG College and Sr Prem Dsouza, Principal, St Agnes College were present on dais during the formal function.
