Mangalore, Sep 23: A two-day national seminar on'Explosives and Blasting Techniques for Mining, Quarrying and Infrastructure Industry' organised by Department of Mining Engineering at National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Suratkal, will be inaugurated at the institute on Friday, said conference chairman Prof V R Sastry.
Speaking to mediapersons at a press conference here on Monday, he said that blasting operations were vital for the effective, economic and safe excavation of minerals and construction of infrastructure projects. The technology of explosives and blasting has advanced to a great extent in terms of conservation, safety and economics. We need to adopt latest and sophisticated designs and techniques to enhance the safety and economy of rock blasting operations, and it is important that new ideas in the development of explosives and blasting techniques should be actively disseminated through discussions within the mining and civil engineering community, he said.
The national seminar will be inaugurated at the main seminar hall of the institute at 10 a.m. on Friday. Chairman and Managing Director of Central Coalfields Limited Gopal Singh and Chairman and Managing Director of Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited A K Debnath will be the chief guests on the occasion. Technical Director of NMDC Limited N K Nanda and Operations Director of The Singareni Collieries Co Ltd B Ramesh Kumar will be the guests of honour on the occasion. Director of NITK-Suratkal Prof Swapan Bhattacharya will preside over the function, he said.
There will be 32 presentations by experts from research industry, manufacturers and others on various aspects of mining, quarrying and safety in blasting operations, he said.
The valedictory programme will be held at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday, and senior vice-president of Fomento Resources Private Limited Y S Reddy will be the chief guest.
