He was speaking the five-day cluster-level workshop on'Development of Scientific Temper and Demystification of Miracles' jointly organised by National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and Karnataka Rajya Vignana Parishath, Dakshina Kannada, at Institution of Social Development hall, Nanthoor here on Wednesday.
Speaking about the lesser known effects of milk, he said that there were certain proteins present in bovine milk which caused problems in human beings.
Milk is also being promoted and made compulsory for children in schools, as it benefits the milk industry, he said, also banishing the myth that milk was necessary for older women to prevent osteoporosis.
A study conducted by Harvard University found that osteoporosis and hip fractures were seen more in women who consumed milk regularly than those who did not.
In all likelihood, huge intake of calcium can also cause adverse effect on kidneys, which will worsen osteoporosis, he said, adding that it was healthier for people to stick to food items such as nuts, vegetables, eggs and meat than cereals, milk, fruits and sugar.
Speaking on diseases and myths surrounding them, he said that every modern disease could be averted if people would change their food habits.
“All modern diseases arise from higher consumption of food with fructose and sucrose. The fructose we consume is not utilised by our body,” he said.
‘Miracles of god-men are no miracles'
During another session of the workshop, Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations (FIRA) president Dr Narendra Nayak demonstrated how self-proclaimed god-men performed so-called miracles with fire.
With practical demonstrations using camphor and fire, Dr Nayak showed the audience how god-men tricked people into believing the simple acts as miracles, and duped them.
