In the meeting held at Deputy Commissioner's office in the city, Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo stressed that the expansion of runway was very necessary for the improvement of the airport to international standards. The runway needs to be expanded before the Calicut International Airport is upgraded with better facilities to international standard, as air traffic in Mangalore will be considerably affected once Calicut airport is revamped, he said, urging the Chief Minister to immediately undertake its expansion.
Responding to this request, Siddaramaiah agreed that the expansion was indeed necessary and said that he would make the necessary arrangements for its commencement.
In accord with this, Deputy Commissioner N Prakash placed a request in front of the Chief Minister for funds necessary for the expansion of the runway. He said that a sum of Rs 138.38 crore was required for acquisition of land and rehabilitation of families that would facilitate the expansion. An additional sum of Rs 550 crore will be required to fill up the 40-metre deep valley at the end of the runway, he said.
