Mangalore, Oct 4: Kendra Beary Sahitya Parishad (KBSP) organised various events as part of'Beary language day' celebrations at Town Hall in the city on Thursday.
Speaking after inaugurating the programme, former Higher Education Minister B A Mohideen stressed on the importance of providing education to young girls from the Beary community.
“At one point of time, education was looked down upon in Islam and people did not have the inclination to pursue it, which was the reason for the backwardness of the community. However, the situation has now changed, and one can find thousands of girls from the community with academic degrees. This is a significant development for the Beary community,” he said.
He said that such significant developments were possible only through education, which was also important from the perspective of social security. However, only academic education will not suffice to strengthen the Beary community. Only if the Beary Academy, which is the fountain-head of Beary language and culture, is strengthened, there will be overall development of the community, he said.
Referring to the harmony that prevailed among Hindu and Muslim communities in the district earlier, he blamed vote-bank politics for spoiling the communal harmony. Due to this, communalism has increased in the district, he said, adding that this, however, was a temporary phase.
B A Mohammed Haneef delivered a lecture of the significance and survival of Beary language.
Senior litterateur Chandrakala Nandavar and registrar of Karnataka Beary Sahitya Academy Umarabba also spoke on the occasion.
The formal programme was followed by'Beary chutuku-goshti' (conference of Beary snippets) which was presided by B A Mohammed Ali.
A special programme named'Ajabro Palaka' was presented by U H Khalid Ujire, which was followed by Beary quiz, drama and'paat-qawwali' programme.
The formal programme was presided over by honorary president of the Parishad M B Abdul Rahman.
Vice-president of the Parishad Hameed Kandak recited the Qiraat, and general secretary Hussain Katipalla welcomed the gathering.
