The deceased is Reshma (23), the only daughter of B M Iqbal, a retired Syndicated Bank officer. She committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan on Wednesday.
Reshma was married to one Asif from Hangarkatte on June 9, 2013. It was second marriage for both of them.
Although Asif took her to Muscat along with him after 20 days of their marriage, Reshma returned home voluntarily on Monday.
While she confided to her parents about problems in her marriage last Tuesday, she ended her life the very next day.
Heartbroken
Reshma, a graduate in Arts, had been married to one Abdul Fasooq from Belvai, three years ago. The marriage ended in a divorce after which Reshma lived with her parents.
A while following the divorce, Asif, a resident of Hangarkatte, who lived with his parents Mehrunissa and Ismail in Muscat had proposed to marry Reshma, informing that his first wife Shiba had died of cancer.
Once her family consented to the proposal, Reshma was married to Asif. She left to Muscat to live with Asif, his parents and his son Ashraf from his first marriage.
However, Reshma claimed that she was tortured by her in-laws to the extent that she was made to eat and stay in the bathroom. While they kept her away from Asif, she was made to do all the household chores. Despite all this, her in-laws would complain about Reshma to Asif unnecessarily, following which Asif used to beat her up black and blue.
Reshma had informed about her plight to her parents over the phone and on October 7, she returned to her parents in Karkala.
Suicide note
Reshma left behind a suicide note in which she has clearly blamed Asif and his parents and held them responsible for her death.
She articulated her pain and said that she was kept like a 'servant' by his family.
A case has been registered in Karkala police station under Section 498 in the Indian Penal Code.
