Mangalore, Oct 11: Mangalore police on Thursday arrested three persons who allegedly assaulted five persons for transporting cattle on a goods truck near Kudupu on Wednesday, and booked them on charges of attempt to murder and robbery.
Police arrested Santhosh (23) and Bhaskar Poojary (24), residents of Moodushedde and Yathish (24) from Gurupura and seized two motorcycles.
Haneef (32), a cattle trader from Ujire, who was bringing 20 buffaloes from Maharashtra in a truck along with four others – Bashir, Mohammed, Shamir and Abdurrahman - were targeted near Kudupu by a group using swords, sticks and rods. All the five were admitted to a private hospital here.
One of the victims, Abdurrahman (50), who was in a critical state, underwent a surgery at the hospital on Thursday. It is believed that the condition of the other four was stable and they were recuperating.
It may be recalled that on Wednesday, a lorry hit a biker near Kudupu and tried to escape. While the locals chased the lorry, the driver lost control over the vehicle and ran into a drain nearby. When the locals inspected the vehicle, they found 20 cattle tied in the lorry. Raged by this, the locals thrashed the five men black and blue.
According to victim Haneef, the buffaloes were meant for sale to farmers in Kerala purely for use in fields. He said that they had the permit required to transport buffaloes, along with a medical certificate for the cattle.
However, Deputy Commissioner of Police K V Jagadish said that though the cattle transporters possessed documents for purchase, the truck did not have the permit to transport cattle.
Another case has been registered against unidentified persons on charges of attempt to murder, rioting and unlawful assembly.
Where are the cattle?
While the victims said that they were transporting 20 cattle, the police seized only 15. On Thursday two more cattle were recovered, while three are still missing.
Qazi Thakwa Ahmed Musliyar visited the victims and spoke to them. The Muslim Central Committee has come forward to provide aid for the treatment of the victims.
