Mangalore, Oct 12: A three- day exhibition organised by Karnataka State Women Development Board and Women and Child Welfare Department of products made by women's groups and women savings and thrift groups formed under'Udyogini Project' and'Sthri Shakti Self-help Groups' in the district opened at Kanthi Church Hall, Mangaladevi on Saturday.
The exhibition has over 25 stalls displaying cloth bags, soap, spice powders, eatables, Ayurveda medicine, kitchen accessories, dress materials and other products made by the groups.
JR Lobo, MLA, Mangalore South Constituency inaugurated the exhibition and said that starting a small scale home industry can bring about empowerment and economic independence to women.
Entrepreneur, Kasturi J Shetty said that there is a need to open a marketing centre for the produces of the SHGs.
“The expos are organized once in a while. Hence there is a need for women to come together and have a marketing network for the produce,” she said.
Apholine of Bejai New Road displaying handmade ornaments said that she makes the ornaments during her leisure time. Her craft is very popular among the youth.
The exhibition at Kanthi Church Hall near Mangaladevi Temple provides a marketing avenue for products made by the village groups, SHG's and women groups. The exhibition will be open till October 14 from 10.00 a.m. to 8 p.m.
