Mangalore, Oct 21: A city-based advocate has slapped notices on National Highways Authority of India and also sought damages for the trouble he is forced to undergo while travelling on bad roads in Mangalore.
Having the need to travel along the Talapady-Pumpwell stretch of National Highway 66 each day, S S Khazi, a resident of Someshwar-Uchil, has decided to act on the worse condition of roads instead of sitting by.
Blaming the NHAI, ministry of road transport and highways and Navayuga Udupi Tollway Pct Ltd for their failure in ensuring the maintenance of the national highway, he pointed out that it was the responsibility of the concerned authorities to ensure proper repair of the stretch.
His regular travel on the Talapady-Mangalore stretch has proved troublesome for the advocate from the past three years.
He said that the authorities had neglected to repair or maintain the national highway, and that people were forced to undergo trouble due to this.
The work on four-laning of the NH that started in 2010 is moving at snail-pace, and the shoddy repair work undertaken on the stretch has proved more disadvantageous rather than of being any help to the travellers.
The pathetic condition of the road has prevented several people residing on the outskirts of the city from using their vehicles and rely on public transport, he said, pointing out the difficulties faced by emergency and public transport vehicles in traversing the stretch.
He further said the immediate concern of the authorities should be maintaining the old road, and demanded that the concerned authorities to make the highway traversable.
The advocate has sought a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for failing to carry out their duty, along with an additional Rs 5,000 as cost of the legal notice, failing which the authorities would risk facing further civil and criminal proceedings.
