Mangalore, Nov 1: The 29th death anniversary of former Prime Minister of India late Indira Gandhi was observed by leaders and members of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee and Congress Seva Dal at the Congress office here on Thursday.
Floral tribute was paid to the portrait of late Mrs Gandhi by various district Congress leaders such as District-In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai, Ibrahim Kodikal, Vijay Kumar Shetty and others.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rai said that although several freedom fighters had fought for the independence of the country, India had become truly liberated when the former Prime Minister Mrs Gandhi had brought and implemented several social security reforms, economic and land reforms during her term. Due to her firm decisions on several economic and domestic policies, thousands of Indians were able to lead a life of dignity, he said, commending Mrs Gandhi's achievements as Prime Minister of the country before she was assassinated by her own bodyguards.
Ibrahim Kodikal said that if all party members and workers worked hard together to bring the party back to power in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, it would be a fitting contribution to the late Congress leader who was assassinated in 1984.
