Mangalore, Nov 5: Akshaya Patra, a Non-Government Organisation, celebrated on Monday the milestone of providing 2.5 crore meals in the district since its operations started here in 2005.
Managed by ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness), and with funding from state and union governments, as well as private donors, the Akshaya Patra scheme provides mid-day meals to students in government schools.
P.P. Upadyay, Managing Director of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemical Limited (MRPL) said that by donating food, the organisation was attracting students towards education. “The number of children going to school needs to increase in the country,” he said.
He however, lamented the'contradictory' policies of the government wherein, though the private sector was not encouraged into government-run schemes, a policy of compulsory CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) was being pursued.
