Mangalore, Nov 10: Dakshina Kannada and Udupi District Democratic Forum and other likeminded organizations held a protest seeking CBI probe under the supervision of the Supreme Court into the rape and murder of Saujanya, a II PU student of SDM College, Ujire, on Saturday.
Saujanya was raped and murdered on October 9, 2012.
Psychiatrist Dr Herale, addressing the protesters, recalled the mysterious death of his wife Vedavalli, also in Belthangady taluk, and blamed police for allegedly acting in favour of the culprits.
"CBI probe will go the CID way. We want the Supreme Court to take up this case and direct the CBI to investigate the matter," he said.
Herale said the protest is not limited to Saujanya case alone. "Let the CBI investigate all unnatural death cases reported in Ujire, Belthangady and Dharmasthala in the past decade. Our fight is for social justice. We are not launching protest on any person or institution. This is to ensure that such incidents should not occur in future and real culprits should be booked," he said.
Esha Vittaladas Swamiji of Sandipani Sadhanashrama, Kemar, said corrupt officials are the real culprits. "Our protest is not against any individual or religious place," he said, urging the public to be with the family members of Saujanya.
Social activist Vishnu Murthy Bhat said police personnel should serve the public, not any individual. Though more than 100 deaths occurred in lodges of Dharmasthala, not a single case has been cracked. The police department did not do a thorough inquiry into these cases, he alleged.
