Mangalore, Nov 10: Mangalore University has been selected for conferring the'Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme Award' for the year 2012-2013 from the President of India Pranab Mukherjee in an award ceremony which will be held on November 19 in Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi, said Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy.
Briefing journalists at a press conference here on Sunday, he said that Mangalore University had been chosen for the IGNSS Award for the first time in its 33 years of service for its NSS achievements.
Speaking about NSS activities in the university, the vice chancellor said, “In the semester-based curriculum, credits are given to students for joining extra-curricular activities. The university had been given a target of enrolling 14,000 volunteers and has achieved 16,900 volunteers. The NSS unit of the university has spent a sum of Rs 66 lakhs from its fund and created over Rs 42 lakhs of self-finance work during the year 2012-2013, he said.
He further said that the award was received for the work completed under the leadership of NSS programme coordinator Dr Gananatha Yekkar. For the term of 2013-2016, new programme coordinator Dr Vineetha Rao will be heading the NSS unit, he said.
Further, briefing about the university works, he said that the university had received 20 acre land in Belapu in Udupi and a sum of Rs 5 crore had been earmarked for this project. The naming of the new campus of the university in Madikeri is under discussion, since there is demand for naming it after'Kaveri' and other martyrs, he informed.
During this academic year, a total of 76 lecturers and assistant professors were promoted, while 19 new lecturers were selected, he added.
