Mangalore, Nov 14: On the occasion of the 124th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Children's Day was observed by children and adults alike on Thursday in Mangalore.
A month-long child rights campaign was launched on the occasion, to create awareness and to protect the children's rights.
Inaugurating the children's day celebrations at a programme organised by Dakshina Kannada district administration, zilla panchayat, department of women and children welfare, department of public instruction, Childline, Mangalore and Makkala Hakkugala Masothsava Samiti at Balbhavan, Kadri here on Thursday, Chief Judicial Magistrate and president of Juvenile Justice Board, Dakshina Kannada J N Subramanya advised people to be watchful of the activities of the children in their house or around them. When erring children come to the notice of the Juvenile Justice Board, often it is because parents do not take care of their children and are unable to provide them with proper guidance. Often in most cases, parents are unaware of the activities of their children in their absence. Parents must observe their children for subtle signs of erring behaviour and give proper advice, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, advocate and chairperson of Dakshina Kannada Child Welfare Committee Dr Asha Nayak said that the responsibility of children was on the society. “If the country has to progress and develop, then we must look after our children. We need to provide them with civic sense, or it may give rise to bad citizens. Children should be taught good habits when they are still young,” she said.

Deputy Director for Public Instruction, Dakshina Kannada Moses Jayashekar and Deputy Commissioner N Prakash also spoke on the occasion.
‘Childline Se Dosti Week' was also launched on the occasion.
Deputy Director of Department of Women and Children Welfare, Dakshina Kannada Gertrude Veigas welcomed the gathering. District child protection officer Gracy L Gonsalves proposed a vote of thanks.
