Ayisha Banu's brothers too involved in illegal money transaction?

November 14, 2013

Mangalore, Oct 14: The case of 36-year-old Ayisha Banu alias Aasha alias Puttoli, who was arrested by Bihar police in Mangalore earlier this week in connection with illegal money transactions, has taken a new twist with the accused admitting that she had opened bank accounts in nationalized banks in the names of her Hindu brothers and neighbours in Kodagu district.

ayisha
Banu comes from a poor Hindu family of coolie workers in Devanagere near Virajpet in the Kodagu district. Even after marrying Zubair Husain from Mangalore, she had maintained close relationship with her brothers. She had got bank accounts opened in the names of her brother Motappa and neighbours Raghu and Udaya, two years ago. Her mother Kaveri had also used to visit her in Mangalore. She had also stayed with her for a few days.

Banu was born as Puttoli, the last of the eight children of Bheema and Kaveri. Her father died many years ago, while her mother earns a living as a daily wage worker. Puttoli has four brothers and three sisters.

She studied till PUC in Virajpet and later joined a college in Madikeri. According to Kaveri, she had changed her name only after marriage.

Case can take any turn!

The Bihar police were granted transit warrant of Ayisha Banu and her husband Zubair on Wednesday. JMFC III court judge Manjula gave the warrant that will enable the police to take the couple to Bihar for interrogation over suspected money transactions.

The two were questioned at the Court for about seven minutes and during this period the Judge is said to have asked the couple if the police have assaulted them and other questions pertaining to their arrest. After this, the Judge has given the permission to the police to take the couple to Bihar.

The development comes after the arrest of five Hindu extremists identified as Gopal, Vikas, Pawan and Ganesh, for illegal money transactions and alleged links with Pakistan's investigation agency ISI. According to Bihar police, during the interrogation several details on Ayesha Banu and  Zubeir were revealed by these accused. “Based on the same details Aisha Banu has been arrested,” said a police officer from Bihar.

However, with regard to the media reports that Ayisha Banu has contacts with terror outfits, the police source said that so far they have not been able to find any such details.

“The case can take any turn during the course of investigation. We will not be able to predict anything right away,” police said adding that Ayisha Banu has seven bank accounts in three nationalized banks.

“These accounts have been used to transfer over Rs 6 crores over the last one year. The four arrested in Bihar have transferred huge amount to same accounts but there is no details with regard to utilization of the said amount,” said the police.

Four-month old infant in Courtroom

Ayisha-Zubair couple has four children. While the first child is in high school, the other two are in primary. The couple has a four-month-old baby girl and while Ayisha appeared before the court with the infant in hand, the press photographers mobbed her to click her pictures. The onlookers could only sympathize with the mother and the baby. With no mistake of the infant, it will have to go through all the turmoil with her parents. The infant will have to live with the mother in the prison too.

Ambiguity in Cases

Lakhisarai sub inspector Raj Kishore, who was with the accused in court, said Ayisha was booked under IPC Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 460 (house trespass or house-breaking by night punishable in case of death or grievous hurt caused), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (passing off a forged document as genuine) and 120b (criminal conspiracy). They have also been charged under Sections 17 (raising funds for terrorist act), 18 (b) (recruiting perons for terrorist acts), section 21 (holding proceeds of terrorism), 38 (membership of terrorist organization) and 40 (raising funds for terrorist organizations) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

When asked about the ambiguity of police, who booked terrorism related cases against Ayisha Banu even after confirming that she was not arrested for any terror activity or link, investigating officer and Lakhisarai Superintendent of Police Rajeev Mishra said that the sections have been slammed to just to support the investigation process. The five arrested in Bihar are said to be having connections in Pakistan. During the investigation this aspect will be looked into,” he said.

One warrant, two arrests

The Judge has questioned the police as to how they have produced two persons with just one warrant. The police somehow managed to convince the Judge saying that they have got the two for preliminary investigations only.

Arrest on Monday?

It is said that Ayisha Banu has told the Judge that she was arrested on Monday night while the police documents state that she was nabbed on Tuesday at 4 pm.

The Public Prosecutor too has argued that the arrest was done on Tuesday. Bihar police had reached Mangalore on Saturday and with the help of Panambur and Kavoor police they nabbed Ayisha.

Mr Mishra said that Ayisha and Zubair will be taken to Bihar for further investigation. Ayisha's answer matches with the version of the neighbours that they had seen the family on Monday evening but on Tuesday morning the house was locked. Even the media persons saw a locked house on Tuesday morning with beedi leaves and tobacco left in the courtyard as it is.

While there was so much activity going on at the police quarters, Mangalore police personnel have been reacting that they have no information about the case because it is not connected to them.

Good relationship with neighbours

Ayisha-Zubair had been living at Panjimogaru on the outskirts of Mangalore since last two-and-half years. The house where the couple lived has worn a deserted look from Monday itself, leaving the neighbours wondering as to what has happened to the couple. The couple living in a rented house nearby before they shifted into their own house in Panjimogaru.

Area Corporator Dayananda Shetty said that the couple had two beedi collection branches. “While the lady hailed from Madikeri, the man was from Bajpe. They maintained good relations with the neighbours. But, they were missing since Monday. Nobody was sure about what has happened to the two,” Mr Shetty said adding that nobody should tag the two as culprits before investigations are over and the fact is proved.

Ayyoob Haji, neighbour of Ayisha says that the family has been living in the house for more than a year and all this while they have never suspected anything fishy.

“While we saw that the lights were on the other day, the family was not seen from Monday. We did not know as to where they went and who took them. We have not come to know of any terror activities here and we are not the ones who will support such acts,” says Mr Ayyoob.

Bengaluru: All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba on Monday accused the BJP and JD(S) of being silent over the alleged sex scandal involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna and said the horrifying case of violence against women has shocked the nation.

"More than 3000 videos with hundreds of women being sexually harassed, violated and even brutalised by MP Prajwal Revanna over the past few years have shaken the conscience of Kannadigas and Indians alike," she told at a press conference here.

Prajwal (33) is grandson of JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. JD(S) joined the NDA in September last year. He was the NDA candidate in Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, which went for polls on April 26.

According to police sources, he left the country after voting was over.

The Congress government in Karnataka on Sunday constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the alleged sex scandal.

Some explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal had started making the rounds in Hassan in recent days.

Lamba said the horrifying case of sexual violence against hundreds of women has shocked the nation.

"These acts of sexual brutality against hapless women has revealed the depravity of MP Prajwal Revanna, but the silence and sheer apathy of the BJP and JDS in this horrendous case is absolutely shameful," she said.

She alleged that in these videos, some recorded against the consent of the victim, women are seen pleading to be spared but the MP continues to brutalise and sexually violate them. Party 'karyakartas', panchayat members, elderly women, women who came asking for help to him and even maids have not been spared.

"The horrible fact is, that the acts of this sexual predator MP Prajwal Revanna was endorsed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he campaigned in Old Mysuru Region on April 14th, 2024," she alleged.

"....the BJP JDS are still silent which shows you their true Anti Woman DNA!! Will the BJP or JDS answer?".

Bengaluru: The Congress and BJP will lock horns on the electoral battleground again, in less than a year, in Karnataka as the stage is set for voting in the first phase in 14 Lok Sabha seats on Friday.

It's going to be a straight fight between the ruling Congress and the BJP-JD(S) combine unlike the Assembly elections in May last year which witnessed a triangular contest among the three parties.

The state has a total of 28 Lok Sabha constituencies. The second phase of polling in the remaining 14 seats is on May seven.

A total of 247 candidates -- 226 men and 21 women -- are in the fray for the first phase in most of the southern and coastal districts.

More than 2.88 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in 30,602 polling stations where polling will take place between 7 am to 6 pm.

While the Congress is contesting in all 14 seats, BJP has fielded nominees in 11 and its alliance partner JD(S), which joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in three -- Hassan, Mandya and Kolar.

Besides the three, the segments where elections will be held on Friday are: Udupi-Chikmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga, Tumkur, Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Bangalore Rural, Bangalore North, Bangalore Central, Bangalore South and Chikkballapur.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Congress and JD(S), which were in alliance and ruling the state then, had secured just one seat each in these 14 segments. The BJP had won in 11 and ensured the victory of a party supported independent candidate in Mandya.

Having scored a thumping victory in the Assembly elections, the Congress now appears determined to put up a strong show.

Karnataka is the most important state for the BJP in south India as it's only here that it had held power in the past. 'Its alliance partner JD(S) is fighting to remain politically relevant, after the Assembly poll drubbing,' a political analyst said.

The Old Mysore region is the Vokkaliga heartland and parts of it have been the traditional bastion of the JDS.  However, the current elections are a battle for survival for JDS.

According to Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Meena, 1.4 lakh polling officials will be on duty for the first phase.

Besides them, 5,000 micro-observers, 50,000 civil police personnel, 65 companies of Central Parliamentary Force and State Armed Police force of other States will also be deployed for security.

All the 2,829 polling stations of Bangalore Rural parliamentary constituency will be webcast, Meena said.

'This is as per the request of our returning officers and observers; so we have given more than double the Central parliamentary force for Bangalore Rural constituency. Seven companies of Central paramilitary forces have been inducted at the constituency since April 22,' he told reporters on Wednesday.

In fact, out of the total 30,602 polling stations in the first phase, 19,701 will be webcast, and 1,370 covered via CCTVs, he said.

Chikkaballapur has a maximum number of 29 candidates, followed by 24 in Bangalore Central, and Dakshina Kannada has the least number - nine.

JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy from Mandya, his brother-in-law and noted cardiologist C N Manjunath from Bangalore Rural on a BJP ticket, erstwhile Mysuru royal family scion Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar from Mysore, also from the BJP, and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar's brother and MP D K Suresh of Congress from Bangalore Rural, are among the prominent candidates in the fray in the first phase.

Also in the fray are BJP MP Tejasvi Surya from Bangalore South against Minister Ramalinga Reddy's daughter Sowmya Reddy of Congress, Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje on BJP ticket from Bangalore North against former IIM Bangalore professor M V Rajeev Gowda of Congress.

The Congress' performance in the elections, especially in the first phase which covers almost all Vokkaliga-dominated districts, is being seen as a big test of sorts for its state unit chief Shivakumar, who has made no secret of his ambition to become chief minister, amid speculations of change in guard mid-way of the Assembly term.

Stakes are also high for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, as victory in particular in his home turf—Mysore and Chamarajanagar—is seen as key for strengthening hands, analysts say.

For the JD(S) and its state chief Kumaraswamy, the task is cut out -- to prove that the regional party is still a force to reckon with, particularly in the Vokkaliga dominated Old Mysuru or South Karnataka region.

Both Shivakumar and Kumaraswamy are Vokkaligas, and are engaged in a fierce turf war to consolidate their clout over the dominant community.

It is also seen as a kind of a 'litmus test' for state BJP president B Y Vijayendra, who has the onerous task of helping the party retain its supremacy in the Lok Sabha elections.

Ensuring a BJP sweep is paramount for the son of veteran leader B S Yediyurappa, to consolidate his position and silence critics who have questioned his selection for the post, overlooking seniors and seasoned hands.

The ruling Congress is mostly banking on the implementation of its populist five guarantee schemes. The BJP and JD(S) seem to be leveraging the 'Modi factor' to the hilt.

Bengaluru: In a shocking revelation, a former member of Hassan Zilla Panchayat (ZP) has accused incumbent JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna of raping her multiple times over three years and videographing the alleged crime.

A case was registered by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) based on the statement by the 44-year-old survivor on Wednesday, May 1.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the woman claimed that when she was a ZP member she used to visit the MLAs and MPs for various development works.

In one such instance in 2021, she met Prajwal seeking his help to get hostel seats for some female students at a local college. The woman, in her statement, said that since the MP was busy, she was asked to meet him the next day.

“The following day I visited the MP at his office and the MP's quarters in Hassan. The staff present there told me to wait on the first floor as there were many others in the hall. Prajwal spoke to some of the women waiting there, spoke with them and sent them off until I was the only one left,” the woman alleged.

As per the survivor, the MP then called her inside a room and she obliged.

“He held my hand, pulled me inside and locked the door. When I asked him why was he closing the door, he told me nothing would happen and made me sit on the bed. He said my husband should talk less and warned me of the consequences. He also said that because of my husband, his mother, Bhavani Revanna, missed the MLA ticket. He told me that if my husband wants to grow politically, I should listen to him [Prajwal],” the woman alleged.

Next, Prajwal allegedly told the woman to lie down on the bed and undress. When the woman refused and said that she would shout, Prajwal allegedly threatened her that he had a gun and warned of dire consequences for her and her husband.

The woman alleged that Prajwal took out his mobile phone and then raped her.

“He raped me and sexually assaulted me and recorded the act on his mobile phone,” the woman alleged. “He threatened to leak the video if I ever spoke about it and told me to be there whenever he wanted. After that, he used to video call me frequently, ask me to be naked during the call and raped me in multiple instances.”

The woman claimed that she was scared and did not make the incident public and chose to come forward after she learnt of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Karnataka government to probe the alleged Hassan sex scandal.

A case was registered under Sections 376(2)(n) (commits rape repeatedly on the same woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354A(1)(physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) and 354C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66E (violation of privacy) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Prajwal is also accused in a sexual harassment case along with his father, Holenarasipur MLA HD Revanna, registered at the Holenarasipur police station in Hassan on April 28.
