Mangalore, Nov 14: “At a time when the fisheries sector needs revival, there is a need to give greater importance to the development of fishing ports in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts for the development of the fishing profession,” said Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake.
Delivering the inaugural address at the inauguration of new office building of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts Co-operative Fish Marketing Federation Limited at the Mangalore Old Port on Thursday, he said that the proposed fishing port at Kulai at an estimated cost of Rs 165 crore would benefit the commercial fishing trade in the district.
The state government has chalked few projects to retain and boost the fishing trade in the coastal districts. Consent has been received to commence work on the retaining wall from Ullal to Yermal to control sea erosion along the coastline, with the help of grant of Rs 263 crore received from Asian Development Bank, he said, adding that importance should be given to the commercial fishing centres such Mangalore Old Port, Malpe port and Maravanthe port.
Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo also spoke on the occasion. Mr Sorake was felicitated by the federation during the programme which was presided by president of the federation Yashpal A Suvarna.
The new office building of the federation was built in the memory of its founder-president late R D Mendon.
Scholarships were distributed to students and gold coins were given to owners of fishing trawlers as incentives in the programme.
Former MLA Lalaji R Mendon, Vijay Kumar, Seetamma Teacher and others were present.
