Bengaluru, Jan 18: Janata Dal (Secular) supremo H D Deve Gowda and Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy have urged the minority communities, especially Muslims, to extend its support to the party to “uproot” the Narendra Modi regime at the Centre.

Speaking at the JD(S) minority convention organised at the Palace Grounds on Thursday, the two leaders reiterated their party’s intention to continue its alliance with the Congress to distance the BJP from power. They also appealed to the Congress to cooperate in his fight against communal forces.

Kumaraswamy claimed that his party could never become the ‘B’ team of any other political party. He made the ‘B’ team reference recalling the accusations made by the Congress, his current coalition partner, during the Assembly elections last May. Before forming the government with the JD(S), the Congress had questioned the regional party’s secular credentials by accusing it of being the ‘B’ team of the BJP.

The JD(S) had gone on to losing a large chunk of Muslim votes during the Assembly elections. By organising the minorities convention, however now hopes to consolidate the Muslim votes ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Kumaraswamy said that it was imperative for the secular forces to be voted to power to protect the constitutional rights of the religious minorities who were feeling increasingly vulnerable under the Modi regime.

He said that his father Deve Gowda was the only leader who could bring the secular forces together. “Only Deve Gowda has the mettle to tie up Modi’s Ashwamedha horse. It is important for the minority communities to keep faith in him,” he added.

Gowda said that when the Congress extended its unconditional support to the JD(S) to form the government, leaders from all secular parties in the country had attended Kumaraswamy’s oath taking ceremony.

He said that Karnataka has sent a clear, strong signal to the country that secular and democratic forced had joined forces to defeat the “communal BJP” in the coming Lok Sabha elections.

“As prime minister, I had ensured that there was no violence during the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. I ensured that the Muslim youths could join the army. However, everybody knows what’s happening in the country in the last four years. If the minorities want to live in peace, they should vote the secular forces to power,” he added.

More conventions

The JD(S) plans to hold more conventions of various communities in the run-up to the polls. The party also plans to hold a convention of women in February, after national executive of the party which is scheduled to be held on January 29-30.

Bengaluru: All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba on Monday accused the BJP and JD(S) of being silent over the alleged sex scandal involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna and said the horrifying case of violence against women has shocked the nation.

"More than 3000 videos with hundreds of women being sexually harassed, violated and even brutalised by MP Prajwal Revanna over the past few years have shaken the conscience of Kannadigas and Indians alike," she told at a press conference here.

Prajwal (33) is grandson of JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. JD(S) joined the NDA in September last year. He was the NDA candidate in Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, which went for polls on April 26.

According to police sources, he left the country after voting was over.

The Congress government in Karnataka on Sunday constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the alleged sex scandal.

Some explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal had started making the rounds in Hassan in recent days.

Lamba said the horrifying case of sexual violence against hundreds of women has shocked the nation.

"These acts of sexual brutality against hapless women has revealed the depravity of MP Prajwal Revanna, but the silence and sheer apathy of the BJP and JDS in this horrendous case is absolutely shameful," she said.

She alleged that in these videos, some recorded against the consent of the victim, women are seen pleading to be spared but the MP continues to brutalise and sexually violate them. Party 'karyakartas', panchayat members, elderly women, women who came asking for help to him and even maids have not been spared.

"The horrible fact is, that the acts of this sexual predator MP Prajwal Revanna was endorsed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he campaigned in Old Mysuru Region on April 14th, 2024," she alleged.

"....the BJP JDS are still silent which shows you their true Anti Woman DNA!! Will the BJP or JDS answer?".

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.
