Bengaluru, Dec 8: The Congress party which has majority on its own in the Legislative Council with 38 members, is likely to concede the Chairman’s post of the Upper House to its new-found political ally JD(S) for which election is slated for December 12.
Mr Basavaraj Horatti, senior JD(S) member in the upper house, who is also Pro-term Chairman told UNI that “I have been directed by the Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to file my nomination for the post".
Pleading ignorance about the support guaranteed by the Congress party for him to the post, the pro-tem Chairman said that “I am not aware of it, however I am filing the nomination as directed by the Chief Minister".
While forming the coalition government, after BJP, despite emerging as single largest party, failed to prove majority, the Congress and JD(S) came to understanding that to give Assembly Speaker post to the Congress and Upper House Chairman post to.
However, since Congress has a clear majority with 38 members in the 75 member house, some of the Council members reportedly not in favor to leave the Chairman post to the JD(S) and pressing the party’s senior leaders not to concede.
