Bengaluru, Dec 1: Former Karnataka Minister and BJP Legislative Council member A H Vishwanath on Tuesday said he will file an appeal in the Supreme Court against the High Court order disqualifying him from becoming a Minister since as per law he continues to be a disqualified member until he gets elected from the public.

Speaking to media here, he said “I am waiting for the full text of the High Court ruling. I will discuss with my lawyers and question the order in the Supreme Court in the coming days”.

While ruling that Mr Vishwanath was “ex-facie disqualified” from being appointed as Minister, the High Court had pointed out that no such disqualification was in operation against two other MLCs – R. Shankar and N. Nagaraju (MTB) – who had been duly elected to the Legislative Council from the Assembly in June 2020.

Vishwanath, who was among the aspirants for a Ministerial berth in the present BS Yediyurappa government, publicly bemoaned the dropping of his name from the list of candidates chosen by the BJP’s State Core Committee for nomination as candidates for elections to Legislative Council from the Assembly.

“My name was the first in the list of four candidates along with BJP candidates N Nagaraj (MTB), Shankar and Pratap Simha Nayak. But, when the approved list came back (from Delhi), my name had been replaced with Sunil Vallyapure”, Vishwanath alleged and said that when he confronted the Chief Minister over the development, the Chief Minister blamed it on some people in Delhi, but promised to nominate him to the Council.

Had his name not been dropped from the list of the candidates and had he been elected to the Legislative Council from the Assembly along with the three others, Vishwanath said the situation would have been different.

Vishwanath lashed out at the State Advocate General for allegedly failing to defend properly in the High Court. “The Advocate General did not take up our case seriously. He has not even spoken to us”, Vishwanath regretted.

Without naming anybody, Vishwanath regretted that the very people who had benefited from their actions by forming an alternative government in Karnataka had “failed to come to their rescue in difficult times”.

He said he had been nominated to the Legislative Council because of the support extended to him by the Sangh Parivar. He replied in the positive when he was asked if all the 17 new entrants to the BJP were in his support.

Former JDS State President Vishwanath sought to clarify that he and 16 other MLAs who quit Congress and JDS did not resign to prop up an alternative government to become Ministers. The Congress-JDS Coalition government fell because of internal contradictions that surfaced later with the then Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy blaming the Congress while former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was holding Mr Kumaraswamy responsible for the collapse.

“What happened those days was a mutiny against the ‘demon government’. We did not bring down the government so that we can ourselves become Ministers in the new government”, he added.

Udupi: A resident of Karkala in Udupi district has accused five individuals of defrauding him of nearly Rs 2 crore under the guise of business partnerships.

Dawood Hakim, a resident of Ennehole in Marne village, Karkala, has filed a complaint stating that he operated a mobile sales and service business on Karkala Market Road for 15 years. He had known the accused for over two decades and trusted them implicitly.

According to Dawood, the accused convinced him to invest in multiple business ventures, including land dealings and a travel business, promising substantial returns and partnership benefits. Believing their assurances, Dawood reportedly handed over cash, gold, and a vehicle.

However, the promised profits never materialized, and the accused allegedly failed to return the money or assets. Dawood claims this deception has caused severe financial distress to him and his family, amounting to a loss of around Rs 2 crore.

A case has been registered at the CEN police station, and investigations are underway.

Bengaluru: An eight-month old baby has been detected with the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in a Bengaluru hospital on Monday, with reports going viral online. This is likely the first reported case of HMPV in the country after the recent spike in China.

The baby is reportedly undergoing treatment in a private hospital in northern Bengaluru.

The Karnataka state health department has maintained that there is no cause for concern.

"We don't know what strain of virus is spreading in China. Without knowing that, we cannot say that this reported case is concerning. We have been reviewing all influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) from December to check for any strain that is concerning. There is no such concerning spike across the state or country," said a well-placed source in the state health department.

The HMPV is a known virus (first discovered in 2001) that causes respiratory symptoms similar to that of a common cold, largely affecting children below the age of five. It is not a new virus.

Cases have been reported in the past, especially in the winter season, note experts and health department officials, making it not an immediate concern, unless an unusual spike is observed.

In December 2024, 714 suspected cases of HMPV were tested in 16 Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDLs) across the country, of which only nine were confirmed positive.

shivarajkumar.jpg

Bengaluru, Jan 4: Kannada star Dr Shivarajkumar, son of Kannada film legend Dr Rajkumar, has been discharged from the hospital in Miami, US, following complete recovery from cancer, family sources confirmed on Saturday.

Nivedita, Shivarajkumar’s daughter, has shared a picture showing the actor and family in a relaxed mode. Sources further stated that Shivarajkumar will be in the US for follow-ups and resting for one month and he will be back for the shooting by Feb first or the second week.

Shivarajkumar is expected to begin shooting of the Telugu superstar Ramcharan-starrer pan India movie soon.

Earlier, Shivarajkumar shared a video from the US on the first day of 2025, detailing his journey of overcoming cancer and assuring fans of his return.

In the video, he conveyed his New Year wishes to everyone and said, “I am hesitant to speak as I might get emotional at this moment. Leaving Karnataka was a very emotional experience for me. Under these circumstances, fear is inevitable, but the support of my fans has significantly reduced it.”

He continued, “The way the doctors took care of me, gave me immense courage. While shooting for the movie ‘45’, I underwent chemotherapy and even filmed the climax fight scene. As the date to leave for the US for treatment approached, I became anxious. However, my wife Geetha and daughter Nivedita stood by me throughout.”

“Dr Manohar, who treated me, cared for me like a child. My urinary bladder has been replaced, but there is no need for anyone to panic. I am doing well and will be back with double the energy. I thank all my fans for their unwavering support,” Shivarajkumar assured.

Geetha Shivarajkumar, his wife, who had appeared in the video alongside him, stated that all the medical reports had come back negative, and it was officially declared that Shivarajkumar is cancer-free. “He recovered because of the blessings of his fans, and I will never forget this,” she said.

The actor underwent surgery at a hospital in Miami, US, where his cancerous bladder was removed. According to the surgeon, Dr Murugesh Manoharan, an artificial bladder was created using Shivarajkumar’s intestine.

In November, Shivarajkumar had spoken publicly about his illness, acknowledging that he was human like everyone else. While he didn’t disclose it was cancer at the time, he said, “At the end of the day, I am a human being. I have a health issue and am currently undergoing treatment for it. I have completed a couple of treatment sessions, and a few more are pending. After that, I will undergo surgery, either in India or the US.”
