Hubbbali, Jan 7: Former Karnataka Minister and Senior member of the Karnataka Legislative Council, Mr. Basavaraj Horatti of the JDS cautioned on Thursday that without the support of his party, no candidate can become the Chairman of the upper house.
Speaking to newsmen here, Mr Horatti said that he was of the opinion that there is a consensus among leaders of the three major parties, the JDS, the Congress and the BJP to make him the chairman as he is one of the senior most and experienced member of the house. He said there was no need for any formal alliance between his party and the BJP to support him.
Referring to the recent unpleasant incidents at the Legislative council where the Deputy chairman Dharme Gowda was physically pulled out of his chair by some members of the house which ultimately led to the alleged suicidal death of Mr. Gowda, Mr. Horatti suggested that the senior leaders of all the three parties must sit together and decide to ensure that such incidents never occur again.
He, however, confirmed that his party had indeed supported the No confidence motion against the incumbent speaker who belonged to the Congress party.
He said that he was proud to say that Karnataka Legislative Council was known as one of the upper houses which have done good work for the welfare of their respective states in the country.
