DC, top cop administered covid vaccine as phase 2 of vaccination drive begins in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 8: The second phase of the Covid-19 vaccination drive was launched in Dakshina Kannada today.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Rajendra K V receiving the first shot at Wenlock Hospital in city. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar, IAS officer Mona Rawat, and DCPs Hariram Shankar and Vinay Gaonkar were also administered the Covid-19 vaccine.

In the second phase, officials from the police, revenue, rural development and Panchayat Raj departments and ULBs are set to be covered.

The vaccination drive is being held at 41 sites in Dakshina Kannada with a target of 6,054 beneficiaries.

District Health Officer Dr Ramachandra Bayari said that the state government has issued guidelines to vaccinate all the beneficiaries from the four mentioned departments till Wednesday.

If some beneficiaries from these departments are not covered till the said date, they will be vaccinated on February 11, he added.

14-year-old boy struck by lightning while sitting outside home in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru: A 14-year-old boy, Subodh, tragically lost his life after being struck by lightning while sitting outside his home in Kedila village, Bantwal taluk, on Sunday evening.

The incident occurred around 5:30 PM while Subodh, an 8th-grade student at Kalladka Shriram High School, was seated outside his house. Lightning struck him, leaving him unconscious.

Family members rushed him to a nearby clinic and later to a private hospital in Puttur, where doctors confirmed his death upon arrival.

The boy's body was sent to Puttur Government Hospital for a post-mortem.

Tahsildar Archana Bhat has directed revenue officials to assist the grieving family. Vitla Revenue Inspector Prashanth Shetty, Village Administrative Officer Anil Kumar, Kedila Panchayat President Harish Valtaje, and panchayat members visited the family to offer their condolences and support.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the unpredictability of nature’s fury, leaving a community mourning the untimely loss of a young life.

Fraud Alert: Man loses Rs 4.1 lakh while booking cab online

Udupi, Nov 11: A traveller reportedly lost ₹4.1 lakh after attempting to book a cab online in Udupi.

At around 1:30 PM on November 7, the man from West Bengal searched for car rentals on Google and selected a website named "Shakti Car Rentals." Shortly after, he was contacted by someone claiming to be "Rohit Sharma," who directed him to pay a registration fee of ₹150 on the site.

After unsuccessful payment attempts via both his Canara Bank debit card and SBI credit card (without receiving an OTP), "Rohit Sharma" instructed him to pay the driver directly. But at 1:47 PM, he received messages showing deductions of ₹3.3 lakh from his SBI credit card and ₹80,056 from his Canara Bank debit card, totaling ₹4.1 lakh.

The complainant alleges fraud through a deceptive link disguised as a booking token fee. A case has been registered at Udupi Town Police Station.
