DK’s Yaqoob among 47 from across India chosen for National Teachers Award 2020

Mangaluru, Aug 22: As many as 47 teachers from across the country including three from Karnataka will be conferred the National Teachers Award for the year 2020 with the Union Education Ministry releasing the names of Friday.

The three teachers from Karnataka in the list are Yaqoob S, a teacher at Nada government high school at Beltangady in Dakshina Kannada, Surekha Jagannath, a teacher at Afzalpura government high school in Kalaburagi district, and Chemmalar Shanmugham, head teacher of Kendriya Vidyalaya at Jalahalli of Bengaluru.

According to an order issued by the ministry, the Department of School Education and Literacy, constituted an Independent Jury at National Level to select the award recipients for the year 2020.

“The Independent Jury at National Level reviewed the list of 153 teachers as shortlisted by all the 36 State and UT Selection Committees and 7 Organisation Selection Committees through Video Conferencing,” the order said.

The Jury considered the applications and presentations made by all shortlisted teachers and after detailed deliberations recommended the names which were approved by Education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the order said.

Who is Yaqoob

Yaqoob is the only teacher from the coastal Karnataka to be chosen for the award. He had drawn the attention of the education department when he established a mathematics laboratory in the government school where he teaches. He started this with the help of the locals. The lab helped in teaching maths in an easy manner to the students of the school.

Yaqoob's achievement had caught the attention of the education faculty throughout Karnataka and he was awarded the state-level best teacher award too. He started his teaching career in 1996 and since then has contributed immensely to the overall development of the government school where he is teaching. More than 300 of Yaqoob's videos of simple maths teaching are available on YouTube.

Yaqoob is the son of Isubu Byari and Alimamma, natives of Koyyuru Unnalu. He completed his primary education in his native place. He then pursued his education from Government Teachers' Educational Institute in Mangaluru and started his career as teacher in Nada government high school. He has also served as the assistant director of Akshara Dasoha programme from 2007 to 2012.

BJP indeed lured 50 Cong MLAs with Rs 50 crore each: DKS backs Karnataka CM claim

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Thursday backed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over his claim that the BJP had offered Rs 50 crore each to 50 Congress MLAs in an attempt to "topple" the state government.

Addressing reporters here, Shivakumar, also the Congress state president, said, “The BJP indeed lured 50 Congress MLAs with Rs 50 crore each.”

He defended Siddaramaiah’s statement and said the Congress MLAs were briefed about the BJP’s alleged 'Operation Lotus', a term used to describe the BJP's attempts to destabilise ruling governments through horse-trading.

“Some of our MLAs informed the Chief Minister about this matter, and he, in turn, shared it with the media,” Shivakumar said.

At an event in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah reiterated the claim that "none of the Congress MLAs had accepted the offer".

He also accused the BJP of filing false cases against him in a bid to "remove him and overthrow his government".

The BJP has yet to respond to the allegations.

Mangaluru: 32-year-old Karthik Bhat ends life after brutally killing wife and child

Mangaluru: A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in the quiet Bellayuru village on the outskirts of Mangaluru as a man’s life ended on a railway track following an apparent double murder. Authorities from the Mulki police station identified the man as Karthik Bhat, 32, whose lifeless body was discovered on the tracks with his head positioned on the rail, indicating a tragic suicide.

Nearby, police recovered keys to a scooter and a house, which eventually led them to uncover a series of chilling events. Following the trail, officers located Bhat’s scooter parked near Mahammayi Temple. Inside the vehicle, they found documents confirming his identity, including an RC, insurance papers, and his driving license.

Their search continued to Bhat's home in Pakshikere, Kemral village, where they discovered a locked room. With the keys retrieved from the tracks, police unlocked the door, only to be confronted by a horrifying sight. The bodies of Priyanka (28) and her young son Hriday (4) lay in a pool of blood, pointing to a brutal murder that occurred just hours before Bhat’s suicide.

Initial investigations suggest Bhat, beleaguered by ongoing family disputes, committed the murders of his wife and son on the evening of November 8 before tragically ending his own life. A death note found in his diary hinted at his mental state and tragic intentions.

Priyanka’s family, residing in Shivamogga, was informed of the incident. The couple, married for six years, now leaves behind grieving relatives and unanswered questions. Police have initiated formal proceedings, collecting statements from family members as they continue their investigation into the tragic sequence of events.
