Mangalore, March 15: A 17-year old Muslim girl, who had been forced to stay away from classes throughout her second year Pre University Course at Moodbidri based Jains College for covering her head, was finally allowed to appear for final examination on Thursday.

Though the College had refused to give admission ticket to Commerce student Hadiya Iqbal to write the all-important examination till Wednesday, the Department of PU Education finally granted her special permission.

“As per the direction of Department, the admission ticket was handed over to me by an official in front of the DC Office in Mangalore around 7:00 am today and I managed to return to Moodbidri and reach my examination centre, i.e. Alva's College on time”, said Ms Hadiya.

She said though the officials on Wednesday had asked her to sign on a letter containing 10 conditions, before receiving the admission ticket, on Thursday morning she was issued the ticket without any condition.

Ms Hadiya said she had worked hard at home as she was barred from entering the classes. “Today I appeared for Computer Science examination. The teachers have given me zero mark in internals. But, still I hope for a good result”, she said.

In last September, the college management had assured the local police of giving the girl the hall ticket for the final exams. On the basis of this assurance, she had been studying at home throughout the academic year, since she attended II PU classes only for the first 10 days.

“However when I called the College last month to submit my Computer Science record books, the authorities told me that I cannot submit the records; nor can I write the exams as I did not have enough attendance. When I persisted they asked me to get a permission letter from the PU Department. Finally I received the admission ticket”, she said.

Hadiya managed to complete the first year PUC at Jain College, despite the institution imposing new rules disallowing girls from wearing head scarf. However, after entering II year, the girl had decided to fight for her 'constitutional rights'.

Hadiya's mother Hina said that her daughter had never violated the norms of uniform, as she covered her head only with the uniform dupatta and did not wear a burkha inside the class.

Though the Hijab clad girl had complained to district administration and human rights commission, the College had denied her entry till last day even after receiving a hefty fee from her.

Mangaluru: Six youths including teenagers have been arrested by the Bantwal Rural Police in connection with a brutal assault on 21-year-old Aboobakar (name changed to hide identity), an incident that was widely shared on social media after footage revealed the victim tied to a pole and violently beaten.

The arrested individuals, all from Kanchinadkapadavu, Sajipanadu village in Ullal Taluk, have been identified as Mohammad Sapwan (25), Mohammad Rizwan (25), Irfan (27), Anis Ahmad (19), Nasir (27), and Shakeer (18). According to police reports, the assault took place on November 7 in Kanchinadkapadavu.

The sequence of events began when Aboobakar was reportedly called to a residence in Kanchinadkapadavu by a female relative. Upon his arrival, he was confronted by the accused, who questioned his presence, tied him to a pole with ropes, and attacked him while he was shirtless.

Aboobakar managed to file a police complaint the following day, detailing the assault. As his injuries worsened, he was admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru.

Bengaluru, Nov 1: Hardline BJP leader and Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "Nationalise Waqf Assets", alleging Waqf board of "blatant violation" in claiming of the lands of Farmers, temples and mutts.

Taking to his social media, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal posted on X, saying "I have written a letter to the hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji to Nationalize the Waqf Assets in view of the arbitrary, blatant violation in claiming of the lands of Farmers, Landowners, Temples, Trusts and Mutts across the country by the Waqf board. All the citizens of the country have equal rights on the land. If the motive of Waqf is welfare and social service, this has to be done without bias and religious discrimination as India is a secular nation."

Additionally, Vijayapura MLA also attached the letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his post.

Earlier, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya had accused the Waqf Board of encroaching on thousands of acres of farmers' lands with the support of the Karnataka government.

Surya stated, "There have been multiple press conferences and videos in the public domain where the Minister himself has admitted that these Waqf adalats are being conducted under the Chief Minister's instructions. This is a grave matter, where thousands of acres of farmers' lands are being encroached upon by the Waqf Board with the active support and collusion of the State Government."

He mentioned that, in recent days, farmers from various districts across Karnataka have reported that, without prior notice, ownership of their lands has been abruptly transferred to the Waqf Board.

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge criticised BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, claiming he has done nothing for Bengaluru. Kharge's remarks came in response to the BJP MP's accusations regarding Waqf Board land encroachment.

The Congress leader assured that the Karnataka government is committed to protecting farmers' properties.

Kharge further questioned the BJP's record on protecting temples during its previous government, stating that the Karnataka government is committed to safeguarding temples and common people's properties.
