Bengaluru, Dec 17: Sharath Bachegowda, the independent MLA from Hoskote has decided to join the Congress, a move he hopes will propel his burgeoning political career.

“I’m looking to identify with a national party so that I can take up issues that aren’t just related to Hoskote, but with a broader spectrum,” Sharath was quoted as saying.

Late on Wednesday night, Sharath met Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar. Sharath said he expects to join the Congress “sometime in the new year”.

Sharath, 37, is the son of BJP’s Chikballapur MP B N Bachegowda. The BJP expelled Sharath last year after he rebelled and contested the December 2019 bypolls, which he won as an independent by defeating the party’s candidate MTB Nagaraj.

Before that, Sharath had contested the 2018 Assembly election as the BJP candidate, but lost against Nagaraj who was then with the Congress.

With Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa backing Nagaraj, who might go on to become a minister in his Cabinet, Sharath is looking to secure his own future.

For the Congress, on boarding Sharath will give the party a face to bank on in the Hoskote constituency. For long, Hoskote was seen as the pocket borough of Sharath’s father Bachegowda who represented the segment ever since he was with the Janata Dal 1994 onward. Congress’s Nagaraj (now with BJP) managed to infiltrate the constituency for the first time in 2004.

The sizeable Muslim population of Hoskote could work in Sharath’s favour if he joins the Congress. Sharath is already working with the Congress for the upcoming gram panchayat polls.

Mandya: A 21-year-old man died after he allegedly blew himself up with a gelatin stick in front of the house of a girl he was in love with after her family rejected him, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred at Kalenahalli village of Mandya district on early Sunday morning, they said.

According to police, Ramachandra was in a relationship with a minor girl. Last year, he was booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act after he eloped with the girl. He was arrested in the case and spent three months in jail as an under-trial.

After getting released from jail, he entered into a compromise with the girl's family and the case was refuted in the court. But later, he started calling the girl and continued to maintain his relationship with her, police said.

Apparently, the girl's family was planning to get the girl married to someone else once she attained the legal age, a senior police officer said.

Ramachandra, a resident of a neighbouring village in Nagamangala taluk was allegedly upset with the girl's family for rejecting him. Suddenly on Sunday, he reached in front of the minor girl's house and detonated the gelatin stick he carried with him and the explosion claimed his life on the spot, the officer added.

Based on the complaint from the deceased person's family, calling it suspicious death, a case has been registered, police said. His family was in quarrying business and that's how he got access to gelatin stick, police said.
