Trichy, June 5: In a bid to prevent female foeticide, the Trichy district medical and rural health services department on Monday introduced the windows version of the web-based software to keep track of ultrasound scan centres in Trichy district.
District collector Jayashree Muralidharan unveiled the software, the first-of-its-kind initiative in the state to integrate and network all the 224 ultrasound scan centres in the entire district.
In accordance wit the Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PNDT) Act, 1994 that prohibits sex selection before or after conception, all the ultrasound scan centres should be closely monitored to prevent the misuse of sex-determination.
With the introduction of the software, initially, all the centres in Trichy district should upload their details and send the monthly report of their process. Thereafter, their activities will be closely monitored by the officials concerned. Moreover, the software will provide the full version of the PNDT Act, the rules and requirements of the ultrasound scan centres. Most importantly, the public can file a complaint about the erring scan centres to the authorities.
Dr Mohanasundaram, the joint director of medical services, Trichy district said the government intensified its action to reduce the female foeticide after the child sex ratio dipped to 948, 939 and 946 in the years 1991, 2001 and 2011 respectively. In 2011, the female adult ratio and child sex ratio in Trichy district were 1013 and 952 respectively.
Mohanasundaram also added that the domain name for the newly-launched software would be made public in two weeks.
