New Delhi, July 12: The Centre has cleared a package to the tune of Rs. 45,000 crore for Uttar Pradesh, conceding almost half of the demand made by the Akhilesh Yadav government. Though Uttar Pradesh had demanded release of funds to the tune of Rs. 93,000 crore, the state government officials termed the Rs. 45000 crore package as "no mean achievement".
The Samajwadi Party and the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre have shown great affinity in the recent months. Mulayam Singh's party has announced their support for Pranab Mukherjee, UPA's candidate in the upcoming President poll. Mr Mukherjee last week met both Mulayam and Akhilesh during his presidential campaign.
The hefty package for Uttar Pradesh comes at a time when the Centre is seeking support for its candidate Hamid Ansari in the Vice-President poll.
The package that has been granted to Uttar Pradesh includes release of fresh installments of funds for Centrally-aided projects which were pending due to various reasons, including failure on part of the state government to provide utilisation certificates.
The decision to clear the release of the funds was taken at a meeting between Prime Minister's Principal Secretary Pulok Chatterjee and top officials of the Uttar Pradesh government led by Chief Secretary Javed Usmani.
Several installments were stuck due to failure on part of the state government to provide the various Central agencies with utilisation certificates for release of fresh amount.
Sources in the state government said that the entire amount will not be transferred in one go and would be provided in installments.
Some additional funds demanded by Akhilesh Yadav in his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in April could be released in the 12th Five Year Plan, sources said.
