Bengaluru, Dec 8: The Karnataka Legislative Council had adopted the controversial The Karnataka Land Reforms (Amendment) Bill 2020, thanks to the support extended by the Opposition JD(S) members to the Government here on Tuesday.
The Amendment Bill, which was put to vote after a lengthy debate by the Opposition Congress members, in the house had urged the Council Chairman for division of votes, after Chairman announced that the bill was passed by voice vote.
The Amendment Bill was however passed in the House by 37-21, after the Opposition JD(S) had extended its support to it.
It may be recalled that the State Government had to re-promulgate the controversial bill, after it was defeated by the united Opposition Congress and the JD(S) in September last.
Earlier tabling the Bill, Law minister J C Madhuswamy had strongly defended State Government's decision on bringing amendment to the Land Reforms Act, had said that it would rationalise the Farm Sector in the state, and liberalise the ownership of the farm land.
The Opposition Congress members including Opposition Leader S R Patil, B K Hariprasad and other Congress members strongly opposed the Government's move and criticised that it would result in exploitation of the poor farmers in the state by the rich people.
