Madikeri, Dec 24: In a dramatic result, the election to the Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC) has led to a hung house denying a clear majority to any single political party.
The Congress with 10 seats has emerged as the single largest party dealing a big blow to BJP that was hoping to romp home the civic body of communally sensitive town. BJP has secured only eight seats.
In a surprise for many, the newly formed Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has emerged as kingmaker by bagging four seats in 23 member council. JD(S) has secured only one seat.
Counting of votes was taken up on Tuesday, two days after polling was held on Sunday. Despite emerging as the single largest party the Congress is short by a couple of seats to achieve magic figure to win power.
The SDPI, with its four seats, now holds the key to control the new civic body. The JD(S), which bagged a single seat, is not in a position to play a crucial role in the council.
A total of 97 candidates had contested in the 23 wards of the CMC. While the BJP, Congress and the Janata Dal (secular) had fielded candidates from all 23 wards, the Samajwadi Party had 20 candidates.
