Mangalore, July 4: The Mangalore branch of Indian Medical Association (IMA) hosted the Doctors' Day celebration at the IMA House, Attavar here recently.
Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof TC Shivashankar Murthy, who was the chief guest, said that professions like teaching and medical service are highly regarded in the society. Therefore, one should preserve the sanctity of these professions, he said.
IMA also felicitated four prominent members of the Association on the basis of their dedication to the profession, service to IMA and service to society. They are Neurologist Dr IG Bhat, Pharmacologist Dr Parvathi Bhat, ENT Surgeon Dr YM Hegde, and Consultant Chest Physician Dr DK Abdul Hameed.
Dr AS Mantaganeekar of Hubli spoke on social security insurance of Karnataka Medical Association.
IMA Trust President Dr Bhasker Shetty, Secretary Dr A Divakar Rao, Dr Satheesh Bhandary, Dr SN Gowda, Dr M Annaiah Kulal, Dr UP Rathnakar, Dr Prithwi Shetty, Dr Vijayamoorthy and others were present.
Dr K Mukund welcomed gathering while Dr GK Bhat Sankabithilu proposed vote of thanks.
Dermatologist Dr Manjunath Shenoy compered the programme.
About the Doctors' Day
July 1 is celebrated throughout India as Doctor's Day in honour of Bidhan Chandra Roy, legendary physician and second chief minister of West Bengal. Dr B C Roy was born on July 1, 1882, and passed away on the same day in 1962, at 80 years. Dr Roy was both a friend and doctor to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. The nation honoured Dr Roy with the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian award on February 4,1961.
