Kasaragod, Sept : Human rights campaigner and social activist Shabnam Hashmi has called for the ouster of the Narendra Modi led government to safeguard the democratic and Constitutional tenets of the country.
The social activist, who was here to flag off the five-day long ‘Bathen Aman Ki’ (Peace Conversation) Yatra from Kerala to New Delhi, was addressing a meet-the-press on Friday.
She said women are the most vulnerable section in society and often fall victims to the politics of polarisation being pursued by the BJP- led government.
The communal and fascist policies pursued by the government ensure that people associated with any organisation or group found to be dissenting with the government agenda are either jailed or killed, she said.
On the ordinance passed by the Centre on triple talaq, Ms. Hashmi said such important decisions should be taken by following the requisite procedures.
“I stand by the Supreme Court verdict ordering the triple talaq as null and void and such important decisions should be ratified only by Parliament.” The unexpected ordinance should be viewed as a ploy to cover up a series of ‘anti-people’ policies like demonetisation, enforcement of the GST regime, and steady escalation in petroleum product prices, she said.
The yatra will pass through major centres in Kannur, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Wayanad to end its Kerala leg at Mananthavady in Wayanad on September 25 before entering Karnataka. Similar marches have simultaneously commenced from Kanyakumari, Assam, Delhi , Jammu & Kashmir and would culminate in New Delhi on October 13.
