Shivamogga, Oct 16: Former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has said that in the bypolls to three parliamentary and two Assembly segments in Karnataka, the public would teach a “fitting lesson” to both the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress for having entered into an “unholy alliance” for the sake of power.

Speaking at a convention held here after his son B.Y. Raghavendra filed his nomination papers as candidate for the Shivamogga Lok Sabha seat.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said that though the BJP had won 104 seats in the recent Assembly elections and emerged as the single largest party, it had to remain in the Opposition because of the “unholy understanding” between the Congress and the JD(S).

Terming the coalition government a “mockery of democracy and an insult to the people’s mandate,” he said the leaders of those two parties had hurled serious allegations against each other while campaigning for the Assembly elections.

Son’s assents double in four years

The value of assets belonging to B.Y. Raghavendra, BJP candidate from Shivamogga and son of former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, has almost doubled over a period of four years.

Mr. Raghavendra, who has declared himself as an agriculturist, entrepreneur and businessman, has put down the total value of the assets of his family, including those of his wife Tejaswini, to be Rs. 58.59 crore. While the value of his own assets totals to Rs. 51.63 crore now, it is up from the Rs. 27 crore that he had declared while filing nomination for the byelection to Shikaripura Assembly constituency in 2014.

Of his assets, the moveable ones are worth Rs. 29.93 crore. He has also declared an income of Rs. 1.12 crore during 2017-18, while his wife earned Rs. 29.51 lakh.

He is also facing a criminal case under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

The total liabilities of Mr. Raghavendra and his wife stand at Rs. 1.33 crore, including Rs. 61.24 lakh borrowed by him as loan and Rs. 72.25 lakh borrowed by his wife.

Meanwhile, his opponent and Janata Dal (United) candidate Mahima Patel has declared the value of assets held by his family as Rs. 12.46 crore. He and his wife have a liability of Rs. 1.2 crore.

Bengaluru: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has detained two suspects in connection with the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case in Bengaluru, sources confirmed on Tuesday.

The preliminary probe has revealed that the two suspects were in direct contact with the suspected bomber.

The NIA sleuths have picked up the suspects from an area in the state capital. However, a statement is yet to be made by the NIA in this regard.

Even as the investigating agencies, both NIA and state special wing CCB teams have launched an extensive search operation in various states, the bomber has remained elusive. The authorities had obtained the bomber’s images and videos from CCTV footage on March 1, soon after the incident.

Sources said that the sleuths were suspecting that the bomber had come from Tamil Nadu and was staying in a neighbouring state for two months before carrying out the blast.

The hair samples of the accused were gathered from the hat of the accused which he abandoned in Bengaluru near a religious place. The authorities have sent the samples for the DNA testing and were hoping for a breakthrough.

The Rameshwaram Cafe bomb blast took place on March 1 on the International Technology Park Limited (ITPL) road in the Brookfield area. Low intensity Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was used to carry out the blast and nine persons were injured in the incident.
