Mangaluru, Mar 2: Senior BJP leader Premanand Shetty was today elected as the 22nd mayor of this coastal city. Shetty, whip in the council of Mangaluru City Corporation, is a five time five-time corporator from Mangaladevi ward. Sumangala Rao, a councillor from Kunjathbail ward, was elected as ther deputy mayor.
The post of mayor is open for the general category while the post of deputy mayor is reserved for general category women candidates. Premanand Shetty secured 46 votes while Anil Kumar of the Congress got only 14 votes. Two councillors were neutral.
Anil Kumar of the Congress had filed his nomination for the post of mayor while Jascintha Alfred filed the nomination for the post of deputy mayor.
Dr Prakash, the Mysuru regional commissioner, was the election officer during the election. Elections for the standing committees were also held.
Along with 60 members, MP, and local MLA’s, there were a total of 64 voters during the Mayoral election. Among them, 46 voted for Premanand Shetty, while Anil Kumar received 14 votes.
Additional DC M.J Roopa and Joint Commissioner Dr. Santhosh Kumar were present. MLAs Vedavyas Kamath and Dr Bharath Shetty too cast their votes.
