Ballari, Mar 29: The infamous and powerful Reddy brothers – Somashekara, Karunakara and Janardhana – who ruled in roost during BJP rule in Karnataka, are leaving no stone unturned to keep Ballari district under their control in 2018 assembly polls, though they are facing several legal hurdles.
On the other hand BJP too is trying to utilize the influence of the mining barons in the looming polls. According to G Somashekara Reddy, the saffron party has already younger brother and former minister G Janardhana Reddy to mobilise support from the Reddy community in the polls.
Somashekar told media persons on Wednesday: “Senior leaders of the BJP have asked Janardhana Reddy to work for the party’s poll prospects by mobilising support from the Reddy community in Ballari, Koppal and Kolar, among other districts, where the Reddy community population is high.”
Though Supreme Court has barred Janardhana Reddy from entering Ballari and gagged him from talking to the media, he is undertaking poll activities in Ballari, Koppal, Chitradurga and Raichur districts by staying at Thammenahalli village in Chitradurga district, 25 km at Ballari, and also at Anegundi in Koppal district.
What is intriguing is what position Janardhana Reddy holds in the BJP hierarchy after being released on bail after spending 41 months in jail following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation on charges of indulging in illegal mining. Till today, no BJP leader has clarified this matter.
If sources are to be believed Somashekar is likely to get BJP ticket from Ballari city constituency this time. Pending formal announcement of his candidature, he has launched his door-to-door campaign in the city saying he is confident of getting the ‘B’ form. He is banking on the assurance given by State BJP president B.S. Yeddyurappa in public.
