Bangalore, June 27: In growing signs of improvement, Yuvraj Singh enjoyed his first significant ‘nets’ session since his battle with cancer, here on Tuesday.
The 30-year-old batted and bowled, albeit somewhat gingerly, at the National Cricket Academy (NCA)’s outdoor facility.
“I think it was a big achievement to get into the nets. It felt really good; I’m happy,” he said. “It was not a bad session, (considering it was) for the first time after six months.”
Yuvraj batted for about half-an-hour, resting intermittently, against the NCA’s under-19 bowlers. Understandably, there were no full-blooded drives on display, but instead mostly defensive shots. The southpaw later turned his arm over too, and admitted that the exercise had been tiring.
“I got tired after 15 minutes, but I’m sure every day will be a better day.
“Obviously, the body will tire and tire quick because of what I’ve gone through but I’ll keep increasing my practice load daily.
“The body will return to normal quickly.”
Yuvraj had said on Monday that his target was to return to the national side for the Twenty20 World Cup in September. That would ideally be prefaced with domestic tournaments, he had added.
“My confidence will improve only with training,” he said.
“I’m sure the more time I spend here, the better the body will get. It will reach 100 per cent fitness. I will be doing match practice soon.”
Yuvraj is one of several India cricketers undergoing rehabilitation or fitness assessments at the NCA.
Virat Kohli and Praveen Kumar, who arrived here on Tuesday, joined Virender Sehwag, Ishant Sharma, S. Sreesanth, R.P. Singh and Varun Aaron, with more expected to turn up in batches in the coming weeks.
