Udupi, Feb 8: Fresh protests erupted at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College in Udupi on Tuesday as a group of students affiliated to Hindutva outfits intensified their agitation against hijab clad Muslim girls and raised provocative slogans.
The saffron clad students apparently threatened the Muslim girls. Some media reports also said that the tension mounted as clashes broke out.
The Karnataka High Court is scheduled to take up the hearing of petitions, filed by students of the Government Pre-University College for Girls, Udupi, demanding permission to attend classes wearing hijab. The bench headed by Justice Krishna S Dixith is expected to give the ruling on the issue by noon.
The hijab row started after principal of the Udupi Government Pre-University College forced the Muslim girls with hijab to stay out of the campus.
The students refused to attend classes without the hijab and the college administration on the other hand took a firm stand to allow them only if they shunned it citing its policy on uniforms.
