Udupi, Sep 11: A 24-year-old girl lost her life and a few others suffered critical injuries in a ghastly road mishap which occurred on National Highway 66 at Kaup in Udupi district today.
According to sources, the car in which the girl was travelling from Mangaluru to Udupi jumped over the road median and rammed into an electric pole when driver lost control over the vehicle.
The victim has been identified as Ashrita Saldanha (24), a resident of Mangaluru. Though she was rushed to a private hospital after the mishap, she breathed her last without responding to any treatment.
The driver of the car, identified as Nihal, also suffered grave injuries in the mishap.
Unconfirmed sources identified the other passengers on board as Anish, Atharva, Ravi Saxena and Ninad. The condition of three among them is said to be critical. All of them are undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
The impact of the collision was such that the electric pole was uprooted and the car was completely mangled.
Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon, sub-inspector Rajashekara B Saganoor and crime sub-inspector I R Gaddekar visited the spot. A case was registered at Kaup police station and investigation is on.
