Udupi: Shobha Kharandlje hoists Blue Flag at Padubidri Beach

Udupi, Dec 29: BJP Lok Sabha member Shobha Kharandlje hoisted the international Blue Flag at the Padubidri Beach in the district.

The Beach secured the International Blue Flag Certification on October 6, 2020, when an International Jury comprising member organizations UNEP, UNWTO, UNESCO, IUCN, ILS, FEE etc. announced it at Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Blue Flag certification is a globally recognized eco-label accorded by the “Foundation for Environment Education in Denmark” based on 33 stringent criteria.

Addressing the gathering on Monday evening she said, “It is a matter of pride that two beaches in Karnataka including the one in Kasargod in Uttara Kannada District and this one are among the eight beaches in India to get the Blue Flag Certification.

Karnataka can do a lot to tap into its beach tourism potential on the lines of Goa whose local economy thrives on it. It is time that the state too showcases the same to the discerning tourist community”, she added.

She said: “The Central and State governments have jointly spent Rs 10.68 crore on improving amenities at Padubidri endpoint beach to meet the stringent norms listed for Blue Flag certification. Additional proposal of Rs 6.10 crore has been sent to the government to widen the road leading to this beach, for developing the Island abutting the backwater and for constructing a retaining wall along the backwater adjoining the parking area”.

She said: Tourism in Udupi is set for a major fillip with 15 centrally funded projects worth Rs 2245 crore lined up. Out of these, 13 projects worth Rs 2103 crore are at the proposal stage. The development of fisheries harbour at Hejamadi Kodi worth Rs 139 crore is in the planning stage. The skill development project in the port and marine sector worth Rs 3 crore is in the implementation stage. High seas circuit under the Sagarmala project of the ministry of ports, shipping and waterways will give a major thrust to unlocking tourism potential of the district. Floating jetties at different beaches, development of tourism at Kaup lighthouse, Marina at Padukere beach are the other projects proposed.

Mangaluru: 6, including teenagers, arrested for brutally attacking man tied to pole

Mangaluru: Six youths including teenagers have been arrested by the Bantwal Rural Police in connection with a brutal assault on 21-year-old Aboobakar (name changed to hide identity), an incident that was widely shared on social media after footage revealed the victim tied to a pole and violently beaten.

The arrested individuals, all from Kanchinadkapadavu, Sajipanadu village in Ullal Taluk, have been identified as Mohammad Sapwan (25), Mohammad Rizwan (25), Irfan (27), Anis Ahmad (19), Nasir (27), and Shakeer (18). According to police reports, the assault took place on November 7 in Kanchinadkapadavu.

The sequence of events began when Aboobakar was reportedly called to a residence in Kanchinadkapadavu by a female relative. Upon his arrival, he was confronted by the accused, who questioned his presence, tied him to a pole with ropes, and attacked him while he was shirtless.

Aboobakar managed to file a police complaint the following day, detailing the assault. As his injuries worsened, he was admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru.

While in the hospital, Aboobakar alleged that his attackers intended to kill him during the assault. This statement led to additional charges of attempted murder being filed.

Police officials stated that the suspects were subsequently apprehended, charged with group assault and attempted murder, and placed in judicial custody. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited.

Fraud Alert: Man loses Rs 4.1 lakh while booking cab online

Udupi, Nov 11: A traveller reportedly lost ₹4.1 lakh after attempting to book a cab online in Udupi.

At around 1:30 PM on November 7, the man from West Bengal searched for car rentals on Google and selected a website named "Shakti Car Rentals." Shortly after, he was contacted by someone claiming to be "Rohit Sharma," who directed him to pay a registration fee of ₹150 on the site.

After unsuccessful payment attempts via both his Canara Bank debit card and SBI credit card (without receiving an OTP), "Rohit Sharma" instructed him to pay the driver directly. But at 1:47 PM, he received messages showing deductions of ₹3.3 lakh from his SBI credit card and ₹80,056 from his Canara Bank debit card, totaling ₹4.1 lakh.

The complainant alleges fraud through a deceptive link disguised as a booking token fee. A case has been registered at Udupi Town Police Station.
