Ballari, Dec 6: Congress leader and Ballari MP V S Ugrappa has accused BJP leaders of playing politics over the drought issue in Karnataka.
Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Ugrappa sought to know where were the BJP leaders when the Central team, which had come to assess the drought situation, held a meeting.
“One should not politicise drought. BJP leaders, if they were concerned, should have taken up the cause with the Centre, which is ruled by BJP, to get special grants and also the State’s quota under the calamity relief fund. But, their (BJP leaders) contribution in getting the allocated share in the CRF has been nil. Their conduct clearly goes to show that they do not have any concern and commitment towards the plight of the people and their baseless statements are politically motivated,” he said.
He added: “At least now, the BJP leaders in the State should use their influence with the Prime Minister and get special grants to the State which was reeling under severe drought condition”.
He felt that to prevent droughts, both the State and the Union governments should chalk out a detailed plan of action. “More than the State, the Union government has to play a pivotal role in this regard,” he said.
Mr. Ugrappa said that the State government, after declaring 100 taluks as drought-hit, had released adequate funds to tackle the drought situation besides initiating steps to provide relief to the affected people including drinking water, fodder and employment.
