Bengaluru, Feb 19: Untimely rain, accompanied by thunder, hailstones and lightning, lashed several parts of Karnataka on Friday, disrupting farming activities in rural areas.
Rain that started in the early hours, flooded low lying areas in Chitradurga were affected. Drain water flooded the streets disrupting vehicular movement.
Bharamasagar, Sirigere, Bheemasamudra in Chitradurga taluk, Dharmapura in Hiriyur taluk, Nayakanahatti, Parashurampura in Challakere taluk and Chikkajajur in Holalkere taluk saw heavy rains.
Parts of Dakshina Kannada district also received heavy rain for half an hour on Friday. Various parts of Belthangady received rain from 3.30 am to 4 am and drizzling continued till 8 am. Sudden rain affected the drying of areca nuts in interior villages. Ujire, Charmadi, Mundaje, Belthangady, Dharmasthala, Kalmanja, Nidle, Kalenja, Belalu, Kaniyoor and surrounding areas experienced rainfall. On the other hand, N R Pura, Kottigehara, Balehonnur, Kadur and Koppa in Chikmagalur.
Large hailstones accompanied by rains lashed different parts of Kodagu district on Friday.
The gusty winds damaged the standing crops. Heaps of hailstones were found on the roads, coffee estates, roof of the houses, arecanut and coconut plantations at Mullooru, Nidta, Ankanahalli, Gudugalale and other areas.
